Biology, Natural Areas and Forestry Services

Mexico is considered a highly diverse country as it contains at least 10% of the planet’s terrestrial diversity of flora and fauna. Mexico is also considered a country rich in natural marine resources that sustain important fisheries. Many of these resources, both terrestrial and marine, are threatened or overexploited. For an appropriate management of these natural resources, current information regarding the natural resources in existence and the processes that deplete them is required. Lorax has personnel specialized in the fields of biology, marine biology, natural protected areas, and forestry and offers diverse services in each of these areas.

Biology

Flora and fauna inventories: Permit the generation of updated taxonomic species lists and the identification of species under any category of risk as well as species that may be affected by the activity to be realized.

Analysis tools:

Cartography: Distribution maps of species protected or not by Mexican (Normas Oficiales Mexicanas) or international law (CITES, Red List). Species distribution maps allow us to identify biological corridors.

Flora and Fauna monitoring programs: Include the methodologies utilized for the realization of biological inventories, sampling times in different seasons, analysis of biological diversity and abundance indicators.

In this field, Lorax offers the following services:

  • Terrestrial flora and fauna inventories
  • Marine flora and fauna inventories
  • Fish and marine mammal inventories
  • Flora and fauna monitoring programs
  • Underwater video and photography

Natural Protected Areas

Natural Protected Areas (NPA) are marine or terrestrial areas that posses some environmental characteristic that justifies their protection. The fundamental objectives of a NPA include preserving habitats, ecosystems and species in their most natural state, maintaining genetic resources in a dynamic and evolutionary state, safeguarding the structural characteristics of landscapes, maintaining established ecological processes, in addition to utilizing samples from the natural environment for the purposes of scientific and educational study and for environmental monitoring activities.

Lorax offers the following services related to the design, creation and operation of NPAs:

  • Determination of priority areas for conservation
  • Technical studies to justify the creation of NPAs
  • Management programs
  • Regulatory Impact Assessments

Forestry Studies

Natural ecosystems have been transformed by diverse factors of anthropogenic origin. The exploitation of lands for lumber, livestock and agricultural purposes has negatively contributed to the environment. The forestry services offered by Lorax are aimed towards the sustainable use of forest resources.

In this field, Lorax offers the following services:

  • Development of technical projects, reforestation programs and the design of nurseries
  • Forest and arid zone inventories
  • Development of rescue and reforestation programs
  • Implementation of rescue and reforestation programs
  • Monitoring
